Further Readings and Resources
Want to learn more about some of the science and theory that we use at Flying Trees Academy? Browse through the links below. Some will take you to webpages, others to books or materials that you may need to purchase. (We suggest that you check your local library before spending money on books. If you decide to buy something using the links below, Flying Trees Academy does not make any money from your purchases.) We hope you'll enjoy this ever-expanding list of resources. Feel free to reach out and suggest additional resources if you think there are others that we should include.
Note: I need to add links and make this consistent with the resources and links on other pages. Also decide what order works best here - I wish I could do sub bullets but I can't, so maybe do bold headers by topic with bullets as subtopics.
Deschooling. We do things differently here at Flying Trees Academy. These resources will help you understand how to decouple your thoughts about learning from the approach that's used in traditional schools.
Unschooling. This refers to learning through life experiences rather than through a formal academic curriculum.
Child-directed/learner-centered education versus direct instruction (can pull refs from EdPsy)
Humanistic Psychology. This is a subfield of psychology that emphasizes looking at the whole individual and stresses concepts such as free will, self-efficacy, and self-actualization, with the goal of helping people fulfill their potential and maximize their well-being. We are most influenced by the approaches of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow.
Developmental Psychology. (include Ainsworth/attachment [clarify that this is in no way related to attachment parenting], Baumrind's parenting styles, Erikson's theory, Piaget/Vygotsky)
Behavioral Psychology. (esp operant conditioning)
Respectful Parenting.
Alternative Approaches to Education. (include Ken Robinson, maybe Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Sudbury)
